To cross-reference an industrial camera, do not start from the model number. Read four values off the datasheet you already have: sensor format, resolution, interface and shutter type. Sensor format decides whether your existing lens still covers the image circle, resolution and sensor format together give pixel size, interface decides cable length and host load, and shutter type decides whether a moving part smears. Any camera matching those four does the same job; a matching model number does not.

Practical note

Sensor format is the value that breaks a swap.

A lens projects an image circle sized for a particular sensor. Move to a larger sensor and the corners darken or blur; move to a smaller one and the field of view narrows at the same working distance. Check the format before anything else, because it decides whether the optics on the line survive the change.

Practical note

Pixel size comes from two numbers, not one.

Divide the sensor width in millimetres by the horizontal pixel count. A 2/3 inch sensor at 5MP gives a very different pixel than a 1 inch sensor at the same 5MP, and pixel size is what sets sensitivity, noise at a given exposure and how much light the lighting has to deliver.

Practical note

Interface is a cable and a host decision.

GigE runs 100m on standard cable and costs little host CPU; USB3 is short and simple; 10GigE and CoaXPress carry high frame rates and demand a capable host. The right interface follows from cable route, frame rate and what the host machine can absorb, not from what the previous camera happened to use.

Shutter type decides whether motion smears.

Rolling shutter exposes rows in sequence, so a part moving during exposure lands skewed. Whether that matters follows from part speed and exposure time, both of which you can measure. Global shutter removes the question and costs more.

Practical note

What a cross-reference cannot tell you.

Matching the four values means another camera can do the job on paper. It does not tell you whether the lighting still creates the contrast the algorithm needs, whether the lens resolves the feature, or whether the fixture holds the part steady enough. Those are settled on your own samples, which is why any credible route ends in a sample review rather than a part number.

Use this guide as a pre-RFQ decision filter, not as a part-number shortcut.

Machine vision selection is usually stable when the project starts from the inspection condition instead of a catalog model. Before requesting a quote, define what must be detected or measured, how the part moves, what surface behavior affects contrast and which factory constraint cannot change.

Use this guide to translate the requirement into testable inputs: sample images, target tolerance, line speed, field of view, working distance, mounting envelope and the current failure mode. That gives the factory enough evidence to map the request to camera, lighting, optics, reader or 3D routes.
